Plus, a clothing swap is a great excuse to get together with friends and freshen up everyone’s look without spending any money!
- Pick a date for the clothing swap

Upcycle Clothing
Upcycling is the art of creating something new and valuable using repurposed products. Generally, the new finished product is considered an upgrade (upcycle = upgrade original item).
Get creative with your upcycling ideas and design custom looks by embellishing old clothes with patches, new stitching, rhinestones, and appliques. Cut off old blue jeans and remake them into your new favorite pair of jean shorts. Plus, those with more advanced skills can sew totally new items like reusable tote bags, throw pillow covers, stuffed toys, and much more!
Downcycle Clothing
If you are wondering what is the difference between upcycling and downcycling, you are not alone. They are both somewhat generic terms for repurposing an item for something other than the original intended use, but generally speaking, downcycling involves using the original item for a less valuable purpose. This includes cutting up old clothes for household rags, using old towels as pet bedding, and so on.
Donate to Shelters
If you have gently used clothing items that you no longer need, consider donating them to a local shelter that can immediately benefit members of your community.
Donate to Local Thrift Stores
Local thrift stores like Goodwill offer an easy way to donate your old clothing and help it find a new life.
Items in good condition are resold in stores, but some thrift stores also recycle unusable textiles instead of sending them to landfills. Thrift store participation in textile recycling can vary, so it is advised to call your local stores to inquire about their current recycling policies.
Sell Used Clothing
In addition to the above programs that recycle old clothing into something new, clothing in great condition may be sold for cash to online consignment shops including Poshmark, Swap.com, TheRealReal, and thredUP.

What are your favorite ways to recycle old clothes? Do you know of additional recycling ideas that should be added to the list?
Thanks again for more information about great rewards programs. Wow 80 lb of clothing a year per person? I can’t remember the last clothing that I threw out. I even keep my socks with holes in them because maybe I could use them for something one day. But I think that’s great that people are encouraged to do more with clothes they no longer wants then just totally throw them out. Some companies even let you mail it in to them for free. That is pretty cool. Please keep making articles about these great reward programs and I will forward it to everyone I know who might be interested.
You’re not the only one who keeps old socks — I also keep them to to polish furniture and use as dust rags. Small acts like this add up to make a big overall difference so keep it up!
Crazy that clothes cause so much pollution to the environment. It’s something very few of us think of until we’re exposed to such information and when we are, the mind is blown. I’ve always done Goodwill donations (without knowing what really happens afterward), but these recycle rewards strategies would be just as good for certain brands. I think more companies will be offering identical reward programs in the future, allowing for more renewable outlets for years to come.
Hi Todd, Goodwill is a great place to donate your old items. I have read that they can recycle the clothes that are too old for resale, so it’s helpful to take all your old clothing items (even the ones in really terrible shape)!
I must say that this is not bad at all. Fortunately, I have a respectful salary so my wife and I enjoy going shopping and we have a lot of clothes and shoes. I never thought about this, we often throw away old shoes and clothes but this is a good idea about recycling. Some extra bucks are always welcomed, thank you for sharing this legitimate places.
Even if you don’t need to earn rewards for recycling your clothes, recycling certainly helps the environment and someone else probably enjoys being on the recieving end those gently worn items!
I love that companies are finally stepping up to the plate and giving incentives for people to recycle their clothing and shoes. Unfortunately many of the stores listed in this article are not available in my area but the few that are will be ones I will check out.
I personally am totally about recycling clothing. I suspect more than 75% of my current clothing items are used. Some of them I have actually paid money for while others I traded for something in my closet that I no longer wear.
Every little bit helps when it comes to saving our planet! RECYCLE!
That is awesome! I have had clothing swaps with groups of friends and we all enjoy the chance to get rid of things that we no longer wear and pick up a few new things (new to us anyway…) at no cost!
I had no idea there were programs offering rewards for bringing your old clothes to stores as a way to reduce the pollution in the environment. This is awesome. I’ve always been an op shopper, mainly from when I was a uni student and it was cheap, while also recycling my clothes with op shops but over the years, I became more aware of the waste and impact of new clothes on the environment. So recycling became a more conscious action. I’m so glad to see that stores and brands are now getting in on the act too. I know it means they will continue to make new items, as there is always a demand for it anyway, however they are also acknowledging the need to reduce the impact on the environment, while also helping either organisations such as I support the Girls, or End Domestic Violence programs, or thrift shops who also offer help in local communities. It is a great incentive for companies to encourage people with discounts to help reduce the textiles going into landfill and who doesn’t love a bargain. Thanks so much for your super important and valuable sharing! Love it!
Thanks Kat! It’s great to know that more and more companies are taking a proactive stance in the fight against pollution and waste!
Excellent post, Alice, on a very worthwhile and eco-friendly activity.
I’m pleased that you have included some Canadian addresses that I was not aware of.
I’m a big fan of recycling.
I come from a time and place where we recycled before it became mainstream. I’m also developing an allergic reaction to STUFF! I can’t believe the amount of stuff that I’ve accumulated over the years.
A few years ago, I began donating, giving away, and curtailing my “unnecessaries”. The feeling of freedom from all this material is game-changing. I now move stuff OUT and OFF my property as often as possible, and quite regularly. All off to recycling and repurposing.
Thanks for motivating me even more, and offering some of these great suggestions that I was not aware of.
Paul
Thats wonderful news Paul, clearing out things that aren’t needed always feels great!
Thanks for your post. I know a lot of places which we could donate our used clothes and shoes, but I am not aware of earning rewards by recycling them.
My kids are in the middle school and they are growing very fast. The clothes and shoes are mostly used only one year. We need to donate some clothes and shoes. Now you introduced so many stores which reward for recycling the used items. I bookmarked your webpage and am going to find the stores near us. It is so nice we could get rewards by recycling.
It is kind of you sharing such useful information with us
Thanks so much for the bookmark Anthony!
I’m very interested in recycling and getting rewards for my used clothes! I’m going to bookmark this article for future use. I going to sign up for the waitlist at For Days – that sounds like an awesome program!
I love Soma too and have donated bras and earned a discount. Great program. I’m excited to learn about these other programs too – thanks!
Awesome Tama, I hope you enjoy the For Days program!
I’m very pleased with your website As I am an adoptive parent in also a previously licensed foster parent! I have seen a lot of waste when it comes to how many of us discard our clothing and other items that we can reuse for somebody that needs it Hey. Thank you for offering this great idea supplying rewards for good deeds! Thanks for your post I enjoyed it very much.
I’m happy to hear that you you enjoyed the post!
This is great! I had no idea that clothing stores offered these recycling options. The only one in my hometown is Zara. I will check if they offer this, because you mentioned that for Zara it was only at select stores. I buy many clothes at a local second hand store, because they often have great quality clothes and even brand names. Now that I know that the stores you mentioned recycle clothes and shoes, I may shop with them now, online. I am pleasantly surprised that Nike participates in this.
I’m so glad I read this post. I learned something new today 🙂
Thanks Christine!
Thanks for this comprehensive listing of all the stores and brands that offer clothing and/or shoe recycling programs where you can earn rewards. The recycling is something most people can participate in as it makes so much sense, and knowing where you can get some rewards for your effort is cool too.
I had no idea that so many of the big companies are implementing this kind of a program, that made my heart warm when I read through them all. I live in Germany, and we regularly deposit our clothing, shoes, glass bottles, etc. into big bins that are centrally located.
It does help out others that can use such items, and if you can get a reward, there will be a whole new segment of the populations across the globe that will start recycling. That is a good thing for everyone. It helps these companies with their image, but that is secondary.
There are a number of ways to also sell your used clothing and shoes that I did not know about, so for those that may want to use this route as opposed to the other programs, these are ideal. I did not know about them either. You have given me lots of ideas with this article and it will do the same for many I think. Thanks again!
Hi Dave, it’s definitely nice to see so many companies working to make a positive impact!
Wow, recycling your clothes and shoes is a great way to stop pollution as it’s become a serious issue. Hopefully, more organization and companies will start realizing this soon enough and provide for options like these here to recycle and get rewarded for that. More people should know about this and become aware of the problems that we are facing. Become part of the solution and get rewarded for that. I love your post, keep up the great work.
Thanks so much Alex!
I appreciate you bringing awareness to this topic as I never really considered fashion in this fashion. It’s nice to know that there are retailers out there who are providing rewards for recycled clothing. I always want to see more consignment shops out there. This is a wonderfully thorough list of retailers and the rewards that they offer. Also it’s nice to know that Nike takes donations. I’ll definitely keep this post handy so that I can refer back to it, well done!
I am a big recycle freak and this article came about at the right time when I was thinking about getting rid of some of my old clothes and shoes…
Some of them I’ll definitely give some homeless people in my neighborhood and the rest of them are going recycling…
Thanks a lot for letting me know about all those stores that provide benefits and rewards for recycling clothes…
You’re most welcome Harry! Thanks for recycling your items and I hope you’re able to enjoy some rewards for your efforts!
It is pretty awesome that this is actually a thing. I have actually heard of this but was not entirely sure if it was true. I have a lot of used clothes and shoes and I normally just dispose them. I had no idea I could actually make money from them by having them recycled. Like you said it is a win-win-win situation because I help the brand, I get paid in the process and we save the environment one step at a time.
Hi Jay, I certainly agree. It great to find ways to minimize waste and even better if there are incentives to reward these behaviours! These are fantastic programs to know about!!
Thank you for this useful list for recycling our unwanted clothes. I’ve used these discounts at Zara and it works so well.
Great to find out about the program where you can hire clothes for $8! What a great idea! I do hope it catches on because what the world does not need any more of are new clothes.
I’m going to print out this article (or do you maybe have it somewhere on your site as a PDF?) for future reference.
Hi Alenka, I don’t currently have a PDF available (but that is a great idea)! However, you can find share buttons on the left side of the page for social media and other tools.
