At some point, many of us find that we have outgrown items in our wardrobes, even if the garments are still in great condition. These gently-used items are perfect choices for a clothing swap! Downcycle Clothing
If you are wondering what is the difference between upcycling and downcycling, you are not alone. They are both somewhat generic terms for repurposing an item for something other than the original intended use, but generally speaking, downcycling involves using the original item for a less valuable purpose. It’s heartening to see that so many clothing companies offer incentives to recycle old clothes. What a wonderfully long list!
We have WAY TOO MUCH stuff in this culture. The manager of our local thrift store told me that they bundle up 40,000 pounds of clothing every month to send off to China, where it will be re-cycled into…whatever. 40,000 pounds. And this is a low population area, too. It’s impossible to even imagine how that translates across the whole continent. Mind boggling.
But thank you, for bringing this important topic to the conversation. We all need to start being a LOT less wasteful.

What a great incentive for everybody to be recycling their clothes and shoes that they no longer require. With less than 10% of clothing being recycled, and most of it ending up in landfill, recycling and upcycling is an awesome way in which to help the environment.
Donating to a charity shop has always been one of my favourite things as well, if the clothing is still good enough to be used again. It is great that there are so many brands that are offering recycling, as well as outlets like Thredup. Thank you for sharing this vey helpful resource.

I especially have a lot of Adidas apparel and Nike apparel so hopefully they offer great rewards! I also sometimes sell old branded clothes on Mercari, but they don’t always sell so this is great Thank you!
Hi Lorenz, You may have some luck getting rewards by recycling through Adidas, but the Nike program is much more limited. The good news is that the Adidas program accepts items for recycling from any brand — including Nike!
It’s always a pleasure for a minimalist to have just enough to get by every day. However, people, in general, are fashionable. They need to use varieties of clothes and accessories for enhanced life and like to live in luxury. The fashion designers come with creative designers and the world is flooded with enormous amounts of used, partially used, and at the time bought and never used stuff.
The earth is already polluted and this post is highly valuable in that respect, as it deals with recycling, ways of reusing and minimizing the wastes that may go to landfills,

We have a few high schoolers in my neighborhood, they come and collect old shoes. They plan on opening a business and repairing them to new ones! Great ides.
We had bins around the neighborhood to drop off shoes, clothes, etc. There are consignment stores close to my campus.to use.
Typically, I go to India often and used to carry my old stuff to donate to whoever needed them. But these days everyone seems to have more than what they need.

With over 100 million tons of textiles produced annually, an enormous quantity of clothing is being thrown away every year. A lot of clothing ends up in landfills or incinerators — either as garbage or burned into energy. Both options are problematic, harmful to the environment, and wasteful. I do my best to take care of my clothes and donate them to good charities. Thank you for sharing this post.

It may be a good way to make some out money too. We all have some clothes and shoes those we don’t like to use. But it is very disturbing to keep them in our self. Holy crap, I had no idea these big brands did a recycling program. I guess it makes sense since eco-consciousness is trending these days.
I personally don’t buy a lot of clothes, and if I do it is only out of necessity. I always been a bit critical of people that buy clothes for just the sake of shopping, ending up with a closet full of clothes that are never worn, supporting toxic manufacturing processes that happen over seas.

Good article about getting rewards for recycling your clothes. As you mentioned, the fashion industry causes huge amount of pollution. Actually the fashion and make-up industry causes more co2 to the atmosphere than worldwide flying traffic and ships combined. The fashion industry also uses 20% of world water resources. It’s always nice to see people giving tips on how to recycle and even getting rewarded about it. That’s called win-win, the environment gets less pollution and people get some money while another gets clothes.

Oh my, I never thought about this honestly. I have a lot of Nike air Jordan I don’t wear anymore. No one to dash it out too and I just don’t know why I couldn’t dispose it. I have tons of these kinds of clothing materials that I no longer wear that are wasting at home. I never knew these clothing stores give rewards for recycling clothes. Wow! This is a great way to stack up some extra bucks to supplement monthly income. Though it is only Zara that I know of within my area and I will check with them to know if they offer such service since you stated that it is only within selected stores. I really wish the one in my area is among the selected stores.
